After a long year of many changes, it’s time to look forward to the new year and see how we can continue to promote wellbeing at work for both employers and employees. Through COVID-19, many employers and employees have needed to adapt to a new ways of working, whether that’s working entirely from home or a split between office and home, it’s important that employers are doing everything they can to promote and encourage wellbeing inside and outside of the office.

So how can you give you and your team the gift of wellbeing this Christmas? And what changes can you make that will have a positive impact on your employee’s mental health?

Firstly, and most importantly – offer flexibility – if you are reading this article it’s likely you already operate a modern management style where employees are valued and respected and the traditional 9-5 working day is long forgotten. However, COVID-19 has impacted everyone is some way, whether it be physically, mentally or both, and many employees may not feel comfortable with long commutes into work or being in an office full of people. As a result, providing flexibility is key to making sure you and your team stay productive whilst also encouraging employees to prioritise their wellbeing. Allowing flexi-working hours so that people can travel in and out of work at times that may be less busy, as well as allowing to work remotely on different days are a couple of examples of how you can offer flexibility.

  • Make communication a priority in 2022 – a lot of communication in the last year or so has been carried out via Zoom and phone calls, so with the return to the office it’s vital that employers keep their doors open to employees who may need additional support, recognition, or reassurance. Good communication is also key to protecting employee’s mental health and will allow for employers and managers alike to proactive in spotting challenges early.
  • Offer benefits to support wellbeing and encourage employees to prioritise their physical and mental health – it’s no secret that when a person invests in their mental and physical wellbeing, they are happier, healthier, and more productive. But with such busy lives, it’s often difficult to find the time to do this. Investing in benefits that your employees can enjoy will be enhance and improve your charity’s culture and increase overall happiness within the workplace. Massage at your desk days, HIIT workouts offered before work hours and yoga or meditation sessions during lunch breaks are just a few examples of how you can promote wellbeing. Other options include providing coaching support as well as organising regular team building days where team members can get to know more about each other and form strong relationships.
  • Invest in training – providing a platform where your team feel they are progressing towards their goals will help build loyalty as well as employee satisfaction. Your team members are your most valuable asset and investing in training will remove the need to always recruit new talent. Instead, you can build the talent and skillset required from within your team given that they already understand the charity mission and values.
  • Build in some quality time with your team to thank them for all they’ve done over the past year, The Christmas period is a great time for you and your team to get a much-deserved break and slow the pace down for a few days. Taking the time to sit with your team, reflect on the past year and explain how you aim to support them in the new year will not only give clarity on what to expect in 2022 but will also provide reassurance in such uncertain times.
